The most common accessory seen around any school is obviously the backpack. Students use backpacks to carry around schoolwork, homework, books, clothes, lunch, and anything else they will need throughout the school day. Certain materials are required for each class, and with eight different classes, all those materials can be a pain… literally.
“My backpack is so heavy that when I get home, I just start crying because of all the pain it has caused in my lower back,” freshman Taylor Hernandez said.
Lockers are assigned to students so that they may leave books inside when not in use. Students are allowed to visit their lockers before school, during lunch, or after school. They are not allowed to leave class to go to their lockers, or go during four-minute class transitions. This time restriction makes sense, but many students do not even use their lockers during the day for several different reasons.
“I don’t have enough time to visit my locker,” freshman Armando Gutierrez said. “We aren’t allowed to go between or during classes and our lunch is short enough as it is, so I won’t be wasting any of it to put away a few books. Also, I have sports after school, so I’m not able to go at that time either.”
Students are encouraged to put locks on their lockers whether they use them frequently or not because complications can occur with unlocked lockers.
“I keep a lock on my locker because my sister told me that people can use it to stash pot, or other drugs,” Hernandez said. “I don’t want that happening because then I would get in trouble for it.”
As bad as this statement sounds, it is true. If someone stores drugs or something similar in your unlocked locker, you will suffer the consequences even if they don’t belong to you, or were placed there against your knowledge. Possessions can be stolen from unlocked lockers also.
“I left my locker unlocked for track, and three of my shirts were stolen,” freshman Mariana Halow said. “One of my bags was stolen also, and was not returned. I will never leave my locker unlocked again because I don’t want my books, work, or anything else stolen.”
Going to lockers can make students’ backpacks a lot less heavy but most students just choose one or the other, either sacrificing their time to go to lockers or living with the heavy weight of their backpacks.
“My backpack is at least 40 pounds because I don’t use my locker since there’s not many opportunities for us to use them,” freshman Ofek Belkin said.
“There are just a lot of things that can go wrong when it comes to using our lockers,” freshman Cami Rodriguez said. “I find it less stressful to just carry around my backpack. Sure it is heavy, but I’m only carrying it for about five minutes at a time. I doubt that will cause me to develop serious back issues.”

The art teacher, Mrs. Wright, is doing a project where her students are painting graffiti in the places you wouldn’t expect… around school. There are two paintings around Coronado, one in A building and one in B building. This may seem like vandalism, but it’s far from it. These paintings were approved my Mrs. Morales, and this project has been assigned to portray the famous artist, Banksy. Bansky was a well-known graffiti artist turned professional after his work gained so much attention. He uses cutouts to make his inspiring yet odd graffiti art. The art is done quickly and efficiently with the use of these stencils. The assignment for Mrs. Wright’s art students is to try and portray this art in their own creative way. Many of the students are already up for the challenge, as you can see by the paintings of the scuba diving heads seen in upstairs A building. Coronado students can expect many more artistic and creative paintings to come from this stellar art class; so be on the lookout for graffiti with a purpose!

Ever wonder where the blood that gets donated at our school goes to? Well these student have, and they’re the ones donating. While some people use the blood drive as a reason to get out of class, there are others who do it as a way to give back. The wait is fantastic when you’re hanging around with your friends waiting to get “poked,” and most of the students really enjoy being around the great and caring staff. Everything you could ever want to know is in the pamphlet handed out to you once you enter the location. Some people think it to be scary, but overall it’s a new experience all on its own; you can’t judge it until you try it. Like 12th grader Analy Holguin said, “It hurts but it’s worth it to make a difference.”

The few brave students who decide to donate plasma or platelets are responsible for saving the most lives in critical condition. There are some age, height, and weight requirements that are there for your own safety. Most of the donations are from older students of seventeen and up, but if you’re sixteen and eligible, you can donate with only a parent signature. 12th grader Isaac Quintanar was relaxed the entire time, though he did say he came, “to get out of class” sarcastically. The best part of the donation for him was that he was “fed, and I get free drinks,” and grinned to say, “I can get donor points and get free stuff with them.” I have to agree with him; I do love free stuff as well as if no one else did. The donor points that you get depend on if you came to an appointment on time or showed up out of the blue. With the online points you can receive gift cards, movie tickets, shirts and more, not to forget the blood given helps people who are in dire need of the blood. The blood goes to people who are on the brink of death, who may need it to stop major bleeding, treatment for leukemia, helping out with kidney failure, or giving their body an extra boost to overcome an infection; but those are only a few to mention.

Not every person stayed, but they surely did have the right intention. Connor Andrew, 11, felt that being there to donate was “a civil duty.” The people who left had to return to class if they had even the slightest headache or felt a bit nauseous, for their own protection.

The students who showed up felt they were getting a boost of confidence, knowing that they were doing something good and beneficial to those who need it, and they wouldn’t be wrong. The blood in total that United Blood Services gets in a year adds up to one million units of red blood cells, and that’s only from the eighteen states that they are in.
It’s not harmful to your health if you are eligible, and afterwards you can get some drinks and snacks. Those really hit the spot after a good donation. Bailey Bennett, 12, chose to donate when she heard, “I could save three lives.” The gym was decorated like a waiting room, only with bleachers and a basketball court, and the people waiting were all having a good time chatting. Bailey said, “I feel my experience could’ve been better if there weren’t any problems,” as she sat on her chair with an ice pack resting on her forehead. That didn’t get her down though. She felt really positive and thinks it’s “great that we’re giving back (to the community).” There was one problem all the students had with being in the gym, and that was that it was far too cold. There’s a reason for that though: it’s to keep your body balanced. If you were to start feeling sick afterwards, the cold would help you from not passing out. All the students and teachers enjoyed their time in the hero’s seat, and so can you.
Next time United Blood Services comes to Coronado, show them some skin and wait for a little pinch.

Back in 2005, Christopher Nolan released his version of Batman in Batman Begins. Nolan aimed to restore the reputation of the hero after Tim Burton’s try on it with the somewhat “giddy” vibe and introduction of Robin. Nolan aimed to make the film “dark” to show a more realistic tone. He wanted the film to have the basis of humanity and realism. While he did add in Bruce Wayne’s love interest, he didn’t focus on it too much, separating this film from the rest of loved-filled movies.

In 2008, Christopher released the sequel The Dark Knight, with an even darker feel to it. One of Batman’s most important, if the not the main villain, was introduced. Heath Ledger played the Joker, who tests Batman, bringing him to his breaking point, causing him to break his number one rule in never killing. Nolan portrayed how truly the city of Gotham did not fully appreciate or accept Batman, but instead wanted Harvy Dent, a face to recognize.

Just yesterday, Christopher Nolan released the trailer for his final Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. Just from the three-minute trailer, thousands of questions began to pop up. What’s Blake’s (Joseph Gordon Levitt) role in the film? Is Catwoman sided with Batman? Or instead is this her own side of justice? How will the story end for Batman? Will the Joker make another appearance? In the well-read comics and previous films, Catwoman is somewhat of a “wildcard.” She teases Bruce Wayne by helping him at times, yet betraying him when she feels like having fun. Will Bane end Batman? Or will Nolan follow the comics and have Bane break Batman’s back, suspending him for some time? Luckily all of these questions can be answered once the movie is released July 20th, 2012.

Amazing. Comfortable. Free to be yourself. These are just various words that members of the Youth for Christ Organization says about their experience.
Being freshmen and entering a new environment filled with uncertainty, these new members of the high school society have a place where they can find encouragement from one another and talk about real-life situations.
“I wanted to join because I wanted to interact with others and talk about their faith and life situations,” said Devan Ortega.9.
They take real-life situations, compare them to bible verses, discuss them with each other, and listen to everyone’s opinion.
Despite being a fairly new club, already many made the decision to dedicate themselves to Youth for Christ.
“I heard about the club from friends in upper classes, in the Youth Alive Organization, and realized this was something that I would enjoy and feel comfortable in,” said Cami Rodriguez.9.
Growing up as an individual is part of the high school experience, but growing as a whole in a group sets them apart from kids in other clubs.
“Being able to connect with other people on a personal level and having that nonjudgemental environment are several things that differentiate this club from others,” said Mr. Sattlemeier, World Geography teacher and club sponsor.
“Having no requirements and discussing religion so freely makes me enjoy this club so much more,” said Ortega, 9.
Finding solutions in the Bible, helping each other on a higher level, and finally making their faith stronger helps these kids conquer the struggles we face in everyday life.
